The Dark, it remains our greatest fear. The six stories in this collection of speculative fiction explore some of the terrors we might find lurking. Or worse, might find us.
'The Lake' - a couple seek tranquillity at the site of a high caldera which seems protected by a duststorm. Despite no other vehicles, they’re not the only ones to have made the journey.
'A Glimmer in the Night' returns to bygone days. A learned man takes a guide into unmapped lands, seeking treasure, seeking truth. Sometimes both lie hidden for a reason.
'Our Tyke' - a ghost story such as might be recited in a pub – ‘The Three Bells’ as happens here – yet is based on a true events.
'Doppelgänger' asks the age-old question ‘What would life be like if I were different?’ The problem comes when someone answers.
'Harvester World TZ29-4' is a planet destined to save humanity, whatever humanity is. Or becomes.
'Contribution to Mankind' - one man’s malevolence holds a group of petty criminals in thrall. A lone voice tries to make a difference and fails, yet succeeds where never intended.
Dark tales for a dark night. Don’t look here for happy endings.

Lately I been moving towards the called "Old World". The new sprung of authors old that I already had their collections and the new for me.Books from authors of England, South Africa, Germany and almost the whole continent are in the best desire to offer a good book to read. I admit that: Thrillers, Suspense, Mystery, Murder, Ghosts, Occult, DCI's, are my faves.
Not too much fan of Westerns or Sci-Fi, but there is for everybody's likeness. Also, the cut at the middle to insert some chapters, throw me away from the enjoyment.
Ms Acaster, shot a few short stories that you need to read & read again because there's something you don't saw the 1st or 2nd time.
I found that the Plots are strong and the author had the full capacity of control over every character. They're very well crafted. In some stories I feel been part of the scene, for me is the best compliment I can do to an author.
The order:
The Lake', how been out if we had company?
'A Glimmer in the Night', not always the true make you free or rich.
'Our Tyke', ah a ghost. Love that one.
'Doppelgänger', answering questions are always what we need to hear?
'Harvester World TZ29-4', the truth no a fan of Sci-Fi so I just overview. No comment.
'Contribution to Mankind', been malevolent gave you all the power? Someone will try soften you, can you let him?
I heartily recommend this book. I'm searching for others that adjust to my many tastes.
I support Indie authors, they make an interesting twist on writing. The Publishers Houses had to be following more of them because they're are writing incredible stories.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I'm very honest with my Reviews, not only for me, the author or other readers, how an author know when did something good or need improvement?
How another reader believe in my review? If I didn't read the book, I don't Review. If the book is good, Review. If the book isn't good, Review.
With that we all benefit, readers, authors & readers searching for something new or special.

Contribution To Mankind and other stories of the Dark eBook Linda Acaster Reviews
Linda Adcaster is the best new writer I have come across for a very long time. She writes beautiful prose and I particularly love her ghost stories.
The only reason I don't give this the full five stars is that I found the organization rather odd. There several wonderful ghost stories, a science fiction story and then a break in the middle, followed by the first five chapters of a novel. I think I would have preferred a shorter book that stuck to being an anthology of short stories.
But, that said, I loved it and will certainly read everything she has written. Anyone who writes as she does deserves to be a best-seller.
I received the book from a free promotion. When Ms. Acaster decides to write dark stories she a terrific job. Not all of the stories have ready explanations of why something occurred. Her stories are character driven and based on the way people may act if they were confronted with the same situation.
This anthology is a group of four stories by the author of the chilling psychological thriller Torc of Moonlight.
The above has to be about the shortest review in history! But I wanted to get to my opinion ASAP, and I don't want to give away too much of the content of those tales...let the reader find that out for herself!
Long ago, I had an anthology of stories--Tales of Terror and the Supernatural--
put out by Arkham House. It featured both well-known and little-read stories by such writers as Saki, Edgar A. Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and Ambrose Bierce, as well as lesser known but just as entertaining authors. The tales were entertaining, chilling, and some of them--especially those in the "Terror" section--downright frightening, especially to a ten-year-old.
More recently, I received a copy of Tony Richards' anthology, Our Lady of Shadows, a collection of stories guaranteed to give you that uneasy, could-it-really-happen? feeling.
So what does all this meandering have to do with Contribution to Mankind?
Ms Acaster's anthology reminds me of both these collections. From the slightly whimsical "Our Tyke" with its tale of a supernatural friendship no one expected, to the title story about organ-donation and a deadly feud, these are stories which will leave you looking over your shoulder and wondering, "What if...?" Buy it, read it. You won't be disappointed.
